Common Questions

We invite you to ask more.

What kind of sod do you grow?
Johnson Farms produces two different kinds of sod. Tall Fescue which is a shade and sun tolerant type with a higher tolerance to drought and traffic conditions and a Kentucky Blue Grass is the showier of the two grasses and tends to go dormant faster in times of drought. Blue Grass will tolerate only full sun, and does not stand up to as much traffic as the Fescue.

Do I have to be a landscaper to purchase sod from Johnson Farms?
No. We sell to the public as well as those customers in the trade.

Do I have to call ahead?
Our sod is cut to order, so calling ahead is always a good idea. To get delivery, it is in your best interest to call at least two to three days in advance, and to pick up, you can call same day. There is a small amount of waiting time when you pick up, because your sod is cut fresh from the field, and loaded for you.

Can I get sod and wait to lay it until later in the week?
We do not recommend purchasing the sod until you are ready to lay it. If it sits in the sun rolled up, it will turn brown and may even die. We can only guarantee for the delivery. When you get your sod, if there are any problems you should call immediately, so we may replace it for you. It is your responsibility as the purchaser to water it sufficiently, and lay it properly. (For proper installation and maintenance, see the sod page on our site).

Where will you deliver, and is there a minimum for delivery?
We will deliver as far north as New York, and as far south as Maryland, and into most areas of Pennsylvania. Our minimum for delivery is 2,400 square feet(100 square feet for pick up) and a full trailer load is 11,000 square feet. Freight rates vary according to the size and location of the delivery.

How big is a roll of sod and how much does it weigh?
2 feet by 5 feet and it weighs approximately 35 lbs.

How much sod fits on a pallet?
We generally cut 600 sqr ft pallets but can do 300 to 800 sqr ft.

Can I fit it in my truck?
One pallet will fit in a full size pick up truck, 600 sq. Ft. is approx one ton and the pallet is 4’ by 4’.

Does Johnson Farms install sod?
Johnson Farms is only a sod provider; however, we will be happy to recommend to you a landscaper in your area.

What is the best time of the year to install sod?
Sod can be installed at anytime, even if the ground is frozen.
